In Times of Corona: Language Learning in the Virtual Classroom

Companies and educational establishments worldwide, such as language schools and universities, are facing the same problem: in order to minimize the risk of infection, traditional face-to-face classes cannot be held until further notice. Lessons in the virtual classroom form a promising alternative and provide even further advantages. But what needs to be taken into consideration when making the transition? What is the most effective way to teach languages in the current situation?

LinguaTV uses Blended Learning in the virtual classroom. Tests carried out by the eLearning Journal have now confirmed that this concept works very well in practice. The virtual lessons via video conference are seamlessly integrated with the digital self-study courses. For example, the teacher sets the learner homework to watch a specific video or complete a writing exercise in the LinguaTV app. In the following lesson in the virtual classroom, the teaching materials are explored more deeply, relevant vocabulary is repeated and any questions are clarified. Role-play is a particularly good way of encouraging the learners to speak actively, to put them in different situations and to practise those language skills that are most relevant to their work.
