German courses for refugees from Ukraine

Thousands of Ukrainians are currently seeking safe refuge in Germany. For social and professional integration to succeed, good language skills are key. The Berlin-based language course provider LinguaTV has already assisted in the language acquisition of refugees from Syria and in the integration of employees with an immigrant background. The German courses optimized for this target group and the valuable experience gained from many projects are now also benefiting the refugees from Ukraine and the many helpers.

More than 4 million people from Ukraine are currently on the run. More than 300,000 have arrived in Germany so far and several thousand more are arriving every day. For many of them, the first thing they need is basic care and accommodation. But what comes after that? Since it is unlikely that they will be able to return home soon, many Ukrainians could soon find themselves on the German labor market. Politicians have already created a legal basis for this: Refugees from Ukraine will receive a blanket work permit upon registration. Employers' associations and trade unions welcomed the decision and, for their part, declared their intention to contribute to the reception, training and labor market integration of the refugees. Rapid language acquisition is likely to play a key role here, as a good knowledge of German remains the most important prerequisite in most industries.

But how can we set up tens of thousands of German courses as quickly as possible?

The experts for digital language training at LinguaTV can make a contribution here and offer special German courses for refugees from Ukraine. The multimedia self-learning courses can be used independently of time and place with the LinguaTV mobile app. In addition to scenic videos and interactive exercises, grammar tutorials, vocabulary and pronunciation trainers, and a conversation trainer are used. The fully-fledged language courses have been used successfully for many years by companies, universities, educational institutions and the Federal Employment Agency. They were already recognized in 2015 by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) for integration instruction. Most recently, the German training of Deutsche Post / DHL for postal and parcel delivery staff was awarded this year's eLearning Award 2022.

The repertoire currently includes 22 different German courses. These include basic general language courses at levels A1 to C1, but also job-specific courses, such as Business German, and industry-specific vocabulary trainers, such as for logistics, tourism, medicine/nursing, building cleaning, food production, automotive mechatronics, etc. The digital German courses can be made available to any number of learners within a very short time.

To ensure that the courses can also be used by beginners with no prior knowledge of German, there are already 11 different user languages, including Russian and English. This includes not only elements of user guidance, but also extensive learning content such as subtitles for scenic videos and grammar videos, as well as vocabulary and sample sentences in the vocabulary trainers. There are also plans to translate the German courses into Ukrainian.

In the past, the German courses have already proven their worth in a similarly difficult situation. In 2015, LinguaTV worked with the Federal Employment Agency and various companies, including Allianz, McDonald's, among others, to provide German courses for refugees from Syria. Not only were extensive Arabic translations made for this purpose, but numerous optimizations were also made to the LinguaTV app. These include, for example, the ability to download lessons and entire courses in order to be able to use the language courses offline even in situations without a reliable Internet connection.

Conclusion:

LinguaTV's digital German courses offer a fast and scalable way to provide effective language training to refugees from Ukraine.
